HOPE VI PROJECT ENJOYS SUCCESS

Partners in the HOPE VI project are pleased to announce the success of Phase IV of the project. Called Harbor Bluffs, this phase resulted in the demolition of the existing Whitfield I site and includes the redevelopment of the land which includes the construction of 52 new town homes on the existing site.

Sixteen units are completed as a part of this phase. An additional 36 units will begin construction in later part of 2009. Ground was broken for this phase of the project on June 12, 2009. Throughout the summer the project has remained on time and on budget. Tenants have begun moving into the new units.

Benton Harbor Housing Commission Executive Director Juanita Gibbs said, " The Housing Commission truly appreciates all of the partners that have made this a project a reality. Thanks to their support, we are able to offer our resident a stellar housing product, even in tough economic times when many projects are being stalled or canceled. I am especially proud to say that the project was completed on time and within budget. We are looking forward to the next portion of this phase of the project getting underway."

In 2004, the Benton Harbor Housing Commission succeeded in winning funding of the HOPE VI federal grant. Cornerstone Alliance serves as co-developer with Star Development and Financial for the HOPE VI grant. The HOPE VI initiative will bring over 252 new homes to Benton Harbor when all of the various phases are completed.
